“This art-deco apartments’ magnificent arched windows and window seats were restored and then emphasised by choosing, tone on tone, subtle textiles for window seats, cushions and bedhead.

The buttery colour of the Portofino Graham Cracker from The Textile Company was the perfect choice to complement the Beige USM Haller Bedside tables from Anibou.”

rThis apartment interior can be found in one of the most celebrated apartment buildings in Melbourne, Fairlie, by the venerable modernists Yuncken Freeman Brothers, Griffiths and Simpson. The brief was for a down-size apartment for a client transitioning from a large house and garden which came with a lifetime of carefully and intelligently collected art and furniture. Our first move was spatial, a desire to break down the cellular plan and introduce enfilades which would reveal the triple aspect of the floor-plate but also acknowledge the way an apartment can be inhabited as a variegated progression through a continuous space.

Materiality, texture, surface and colour draw on the tertiary hues of late modernism and the luxurious intensity of a design movement at its hedonistic, grasscloth is at once contemporary and nostalgic. Each roll is completely unique, exquisitely and subtly textured from a distance and ingeniously intricate up-close. The custom coloured wallpaper in the snug speaks to the modernist palette and creates a bold backdrop for the clients collected pieces.

“We sourced the Fabricut Bazaar fabric in blue for use as a custom made ottoman in our family friendly living room at our East Toowoomba 2 project. We find patterns in family zones are very forgiving for clients with little ones and all of the associated wear and tear! This room needed a vibrant fabric that was going to anchor the other patterned fabrics utilised in this layered room instead of competing with them… The paisley did just that! The trim was a fun addition that gave the ottoman some formality and structure and kept the multicoloured space looking refined.”

When reimagining the iconic Woolly Bay Hotel, Woolloomooloo, Luchetti Krelle took cues from the hotel’s waterfront location and the Med, with blue mosaic tiles, terrazzo and a pebble-grey paint job.

Drinking and dining sequenced over three levels transitions from a lounge atmosphere on the ground level to a fresh interpretation of beach club resorts aloft in the Arturo’s restaurant and rooftop bar. The rooftop features the gorgeous Fabricut Kousa Stripe dressed up as cushions on the banquette seating and the vibrant mustard Aqua Clean Bellagio also used on the banquette seating bringing the hotel atmosphere life.

“I am a passionate supporter of S. Harris for the quality of the products and innovative designs. In keeping with our monochromatic palette, Barcelo Stripe-01 was selected for its durability (100,000 Double Rubs), composition and contemporary design.

The vaulted ceiling in this Principal Suite is very high but the incline starts quite low. Upholstering the headboard with a vertical stripe helps to lift the eye skywards and create a connection with the soaring apex and views of the bush beyond this room.”

“Designed to have a feminine feel to the space, we wanted this bedroom to reflect the client’s personality through their love of soft nude/pink tones.

The Phillip Jeffries Gilded Age Rockefeller wallpaper in Rose perfectly suited the Kelly Wearstler bed frame as well as the custom rug in the space, tying the soft and hard finishes in together to create a tonal palette in the bedroom.”

Squillace

Solid Air

by Squillace

Squillace Architects created a luxurious beachfront headquarters for Northern Beaches real estate agency Clarke & Humel. Situated on the doorstep of Manly Beach, the space was designed to showcase surrounding coastal views with executive offices opening to an expansive balcony as an extension of the interior. The clients wanted the space to feel elevated, relaxed, and warm; to emulate the feeling of a residential space rather than a typical commercial office.

This was achieved through materiality, form, layout, and lighting. The design direction took inspiration from the sites surrounding rolling waves, informing sweeping curves and organic forms throughout. Materials are textural and tonal featuring bamboo wall cladding, plastered walls, Victorian ash framed glazing, and The Textile Company Amalfi-Natural linen drapery. The colour pallet is a mix of subdued tones and playful pops of colour including blush, terracotta, powder blue, and sandy beige.

“We selected the magnificent Tree of Life fabric in Antique Rose by The Design Archives as the foundation for the Master Suite, and we adore the grandeur of the pattern on the bespoke bedhead and bed valance. The colours beautifully connect with the lush surrounding gardens, whilst infusing the room with warmth and intrigue. It’s a delightful homage to our client’s English heritage, seamlessly blending with the contemporary yet elegantly timeless ambience of their Melbourne home.

For the bespoke sofas in the Living Area, we chose The Textile Company, Sorrento in Duck Egg colourway. The gentle blue hue, subtle texture and exceptional durability made this the perfect choice for our clients, who love to entertain and spend much of their time at home this space that overlooks the surrounding gardens.”
